Years of Experience Coaching Baseball: 3 years
Mike Molstre is a proud father of two boys and a dedicated Fargo Youth Baseball coach since 2023. He’s honored to be nominated for Coach of the Year, though he insists the recognition isn’t just about him—it reflects the commitment of every volunteer coach who gives their time, energy, and encouragement to help kids grow.
Mike’s coaching journey began unexpectedly when his son Silas’s team needed extra coaches or risked losing their season. He and co-coach Josh Fluto stepped up, and what started as a way to support his son quickly became a passion. Coaching gave Mike the opportunity to spend quality time with his boys, Silas and Vance, while teaching kids the fundamentals of baseball and teamwork.
Growing up, Mike was an avid baseball fan. Summers were filled with backyard games alongside his brother, cousins, and friends. He idolized Ken Griffey Jr. and cheered for the Minnesota Twins with his family. Though his playing days ended after middle school, his love for the game never faded—and now he gets to pass that passion on to the next generation.
When it comes to coaching, Mike emphasizes fundamentals over the scoreboard. He believes effort, technique, and being a good teammate matter most. “Winning is always a bonus,” he says, “but the real reward is seeing kids grow in skill, confidence, and character.”
Mike builds team chemistry by fostering encouragement, sportsmanship, and accountability. From day one, he instills the importance of positive language, uplifting teammates, and respecting opponents. He credits his biggest influences as his faith, his sons, his mother Vicki, his girlfriend Tammy, and the coaches he serves alongside—especially Josh Fluto and Jake Warren.
One of Mike’s most memorable coaching moments came this past season. After losing three regular-season games to the top-seeded team, his squad faced them again in the championship. With confidence, focus, and teamwork, they came out on top. “Teaching the kids that they could win that game, and then watching them do it—it’s something I’ll never forget,” he says.
For Mike, the legacy he hopes to leave is simple yet powerful: that his players not only learn the fundamentals of baseball but also life lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and character. “It’s an honor and a joy to coach these kids,” he says. “If I’ve made even a small impact on their lives, that’s the greatest reward.”
