Years of Experience Coaching Baseball: 11 years
Greg Miller’s baseball journey began in Sherwood, North Dakota, where his passion for the game grew as he played eight years of American Legion baseball. Starting at just 12 years old because his hometown didn’t have enough players, Greg quickly learned the value of resilience and responsibility on the field. His playing career carried him through one year at MSU-Bottineau and three years at Valley City State before he eventually settled in Fargo.
Today, Greg and his wife, Tahnee, are raising a lively household of eight children, ranging from just 4 months to 11 years old. As a stay-at-home dad, Greg has embraced the unique opportunity to coach his boys during the summer while also serving as an assistant coach at Shanley High School in the spring. Teaching the game and giving young athletes the confidence to succeed has become one of his greatest joys.
Greg’s coaching philosophy is simple but powerful: process over results. He teaches his players that once the ball leaves your hand or the bat, there are countless factors outside of your control. What you can control, however, is attitude and effort. Those two traits, Greg believes, are contagious. “In baseball and in life, talent will only take you so far,” he says. “Attitude and effort carry you the rest of the way—for better or worse.”
This mindset naturally balances player development and competition. For Greg, winning is a byproduct of preparation and growth. Victories on the field signal progress in practice, situational awareness, and learning the game the right way. At the youth level especially, he emphasizes that success is defined by improvement, teamwork, and fun—not just the scoreboard.
Greg considers a positive attitude the most important trait a coach can have. By fostering an environment where players feel safe to make mistakes and excited to show up, he helps athletes of all skill levels develop at their own pace. Whether it’s adjusting pitching in coach-pitch to help kids connect with the ball, finding comfortable defensive positions in kid-pitch, or defining roles for older players, Greg celebrates every success and focuses on keeping kids challenged and engaged.
One of Greg’s biggest influences was his college assistant coach, whose philosophy centered on the mental side of baseball. The lesson that stuck most: win the 15 seconds between pitches. That preparation, Greg says, is something every player can master regardless of physical ability.
Among his proudest moments as a coach was helping Shanley High School win the 2024 State Class A Baseball Tournament. The team was not only full of talent but also full of great character—an ideal blend of hard work and ability that made the championship especially rewarding. “It was the perfect example of talent and effort producing great results,” Greg reflects. “I was just grateful to be along for the ride.”
For Greg Miller, coaching is more than teaching baseball—it’s shaping young athletes into confident, resilient people who love the game and the lessons it brings.
We appreciate your hard work and commitment, Greg!
